Biography

PETER DOCKER is inspired by the opportunity to enable others to be extraordinary. His leadership and organizational culture consultancy, Why Not, exists to enable others to be just that as individuals and as businesses in order for them to be more fulfilled in their work and careers. Working closely with Simon Sinek and his Start With Why team, Why Not believes in creating breakthrough performance by connecting people to a higher, common purpose -- a Why. Why Not does this through enabling people to see the world from a different perspective, by challenging assumptions, and by sharing their insights into how human beings operate, communicate and relate.

A leadership consultant and executive coach for clients within industry, charities, government, and police, Peter's commercial experience includes several years of leading a team for an international management consultancy, working across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He has worked at senior levels with several of the world's largest companies, developing an understanding of many industries including oil & gas, construction, mining, pharmaceuticals and aviation.

A former senior Royal Air Force officer and professional pilot, Peter has been a Force Commander during combat flying operations and has seen service across the world. A seasoned crisis manager, his career has encompassed being an international negotiator for the UK Government, leading an aviation training and standards organization; teaching post-graduates at a globally renowned college; flying PM Margaret Thatcher around the world; and leading multi-billion dollar international procurement projects.

Harnessing the Power of Why
Enable the Extraordinary

Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle helps people connect to a higher purpose – a ‘Why’. As an organization, how do you harness that to create a powerful culture in which everyone is aligned, are more fulfilled in what they do and are volunteering discretionary effort to create extraordinary, sustainable results? Peter introduces Five Key Principles, starting with Why, which provide a framework that can enable the extraordinary to happen in your business.

Leadership during Crisis

Peter gives a compelling account of what it was like to take 170 men and women to war and back during the 2003 Gulf conflict. This is a story not about politics, but about people who were called upon to put their lives on the line for each other. Lacking equipment and operating old, unprotected aircraft, they flew every mission they were tasked and everyone returned home safely. This was not by chance – it called upon a particular type of leadership. Peter draws on his own experience and uses other case studies, including from NASA’s space program, to identify how this different type of leadership can be applied in business to produce results that extend far beyond what may be expected.

Leading Personal and Group Resilience

High-stress situations over extended periods of time can test the resilience of individuals and the organizations to which they belong. However, there is a type of leadership and culture that enables teams to not only survive but bounce-forward from negative external influences, while also empowering them to create breakthroughs in ‘normal’ times. Using case studies drawn from his own experience, Peter explains what underpins this culture and style of leadership and how it can be harnessed to transform any business.

Aircraft Emergency
Captaincy – and the Art of Followership

We often take for granted the professionalism of the flight crews who pilot the aircraft we fly in. But what actually happens on the flight deck during an emergency? What is the training that ensures a flight crew works effectively together to achieve the best possible outcome when often they will have only met an hour before take-off? Drawing on his experience flying thousands of people, including the British Prime Minister, around the world, Peter explains what it takes to get an aircraft down safely. He identifies the Leadership needed from the captain, together with the Followership required of the crew, before linking to how they can be used effectively in any organization to remove interference and accelerate performance.
